FAQ

  • What is the role of an interior decorator?

The role of an interior decorator is to enhance the aesthetics of a space through the curation and sourcing of furniture, art, soft furnishings, colour schemes, and accessories. It's our job to create a cohesive home that visually delights. Your preferences and functional needs are paramount to all decisions and design directions.

  • How is interior decoration different from interior design?

Interior decoration focuses solely on the aesthetics and furnishing elements of a space — essentially all the loose elements and soft finishes — such as the furniture, curtains, rugs, art, and the colour on the walls.

Interior design, in contrast, considers the broader scope of a space including spatial planning, joinery, and construction aspects.

Interior decorators generally work within existing or completed spaces, while designers may be involved in structural changes.

  • What types of projects do you specialise in?

Our studio specialises in furniture and colour curation services. We work predominantly in the residential sector but are open to discussing commercial projects.

  • What is the typical process of working with an interior decorator?

Interior decoration (including furniture and soft furnishing services) is a staged process typically consisting of an initial consultation, design development, concept presentation, material selection, procurement, and installation. Every project is different, so we work closely with you to ensure your vision becomes a reality, while adhering to your budget and timeline.

Our colour consultations are a separate one-off service.

  • Do you work with other design professionals such as architects and interior designers?

Yes! We are confident working directly with homeowners or as part of a wider design team of architects, interior designers, landscape designers, and builders.

  • What should I expect during the initial interior decoration consultation?

The first consultation is like a first date — it's a chance for us to understand the scale of your project and the outcomes you're hoping to achieve before proceeding with the design development. The interior decoration process can take some time, so it’s important to develop a great working relationship and ensure our visions align from the outset.

  • What should I expect during a colour consultation?

Colour consultations are a 1.5-hour in-home service where we select the perfect colours for your space. Our team analyses your home’s architecture, light, and existing finishes to curate a cohesive colour palette, to be applied across your walls, furniture, and soft furnishings.

  • Can you help me with colour curation if I'm still in the design stage of creating my home?

Absolutely. In this situation, we recommend meeting for a colour consultation following your initial finish selection. When the site has plaster and potentially flooring in place, our team does a follow up site check to ensure the colours sit well in the space. This second visit is offered a discounted rate to be discussed at the first design meeting.

  • Can you help with colour curation for home exteriors?

Yes! Colour is just as important on your home's exterior. We work with you to select the ideal facade colour informed by your home's environment, architectural style, and materials.

  • Do I need to have a specific style or vision in mind before hiring an interior decorator?

It's good to have some idea of what you like. This could be as simple as a file of saved images on Instagram or a Pinterest board to help us get a feel for your style.

  • How do you determine the budget for a project?

We provide clients with a checklist of potential items and their estimated cost to guide the project budget. All other project costs and design fees are communicated in the initial consultation.

  • Can you work with my existing furniture and decor?

Of course, we often integrate clients’ existing furniture into projects, and this can sometimes serve as the starting point of the design process. Sometimes a piece won’t work in the new scheme, so be open to some items being shuffled around.

  • Do you only work with designer furniture, or can items be sourced second-hand?

We integrate new and vintage furniture into our interior decoration projects to suit each client and their budget. The result is a truly bespoke interior.

  • What is the timeline for completing an interior decorating project?

This is a ‘how long is a piece of string' type of question that depends on the project scope and supplier timelines. For context, our shortest project was designed in a matter of weeks, while the longest was completed over 18 months to account for extensive furniture procurement and styling after construction. We can provide you with a more accurate timeline after an initial consultation.

For projects on a tight deadline, there are opportunities to purchase 'in stock' items, although this may limit the project outcome.

  • How do you stay updated with the latest design trends?

Through an intense obsession of all things interiors! Magazines, trade events, social media, books, travel — everything feeds my inner designer beast.

  • Do you provide sustainable or eco-friendly design options?

Yes, we love to source sustainable options, whether that be locally made furniture, antiques, organic fabrics, or recycled materials. Your sustainability objectives and values will be discussed in the initial consultation.

  • What is the cost of your interior decorating services?

The total cost of each service depends on your project scope. There will be a fixed fee associated with each stage of the design process, in addition to a percentage fee of the overall furniture cost. We pass on all trade discounts to make your budget work harder and provide the best possible outcomes.

  • How do you handle procurement and purchasing of furniture and decor items?

Once we've established the items you wish to purchase, we liaise with suppliers to receive formalised quotes. These invoices are directly paid by the client to ensure complete pricing transparency. The cost of furniture procurement and set project fees is billed separately by Lauren Egan studio.

  • Will you style my home for me after everything has arrived?

Styling is an 'add on' service available for completed projects that allows us to add the important finishing touches such as ceramics, books, plants, and other homewares.
